This paper presents an application of the latest knowledge in hydraulic and mechanical design of the Kaplan turbine runners for uprating projects. The main focus is not only on the increase of efficiency and annual electricity production, but also on the extension of lifetime and durability of the Kaplan turbine runner. For this reason so called sleeping runner regulation of the Kaplan turbine is presented, when the runner remains in constant opening and regulation is provided by distributor only. The comprehensive hydraulic and mechanical design was realized by using of the modern computational methods verified by model tests in hydraulic laboratory. The features of the new Kaplan turbine runner designed for uprating of the existing older low head power plants were confirmed. …
