pH has been suggested as a biomarker able to provide reliable information about wound healing. However, the underlying electrophysiological mechanisms responsible for pH changes observed in practice still remain unknown and a lack of bioelectric models capable of simulating these still exists. In this work, the authors have proposed a 2D rectangular wound model based on Nernst-Planck equations for the major ionic species involved in wound healing together with the implication of endogenous electric fields. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the model, both pH and electric potential results have been successfully compared with experimental data in the literature.
