As discussed in the last chapter, Third Wave Animation is the moment where UK mainstream television animation became transformed. It is here where UK animation becomes more self-conscious, more explicitly fixated on inter- and extra-textual modes within narratives and embraces a permeable, detached sense of distance and irony. When these factors are measured against the abandonment of social and cultural progression that underpinned the previous British Alternative Comedy movement of the 1980s and the more left-field animation shown throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Third Wave Animation’s engagement with representation suggested that not only had the moral terrain become hazier, but also that nostalgia had grown into a central component of this broadcasting moment.
