Abstract

Phad is a lesser-known storytelling folk craft tradition of Rajasthan, India. Mainly these scrolls depict the heroic deeds of regional Gods such as Papuji and Devnarayan Ji—in a particular visual language that is painted on muslin fabric. Phads are particularly painted by the Chippa community from Bhilwara, Rajasthan, and are recited by priest singers locally known as Bhopa and Bhopi. The review paper attempts to provide the overall state of knowledge in this area. Scoping review was conducted to attain the intended goal by deploying electronic (web of science, Scopus, and Google Scholar) and non-electronic (library resources) searching. A total of 36 papers were included in this research review. The audio-visual tradition Phad is the system of meta communication about the communities themselves. Their identities, desires, and aspirations are communicated via ritual traditions attached to this craft. Studies have found that the subject matter is largely dealt with through sociological perspectives. The current review will motivate researchers to see the subject matter through different paradigms and further build on the research with new questions.
