Abstract

The World Health Organization has estimated that globally more than one billion people live with a disability. It is also estimated that between 2 and 4 percent of the world population experience significant difficulties in functioning. As a result of the universal aging of populations, the proportion and the number of individuals who experience disability are increasing. The United Nations estimates indicate that more than 900 million people were over 60 years of age in 2015. This chapter provides an overview of age and disability models and effects along with a concise discussion of how assistive technologies (AT) can be of value in mitigating some the consequent functional limitations. It also outlines the ways that the Information and Communication Technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the smart environments can complement the more traditional AT.
