Over the last decade, the CMEA countries have increased their agricultural output. The annual average volume in 1981–1984 was 5 per cent greater than in 1976–1980 — 12 per cent in Hungary, 8 per cent in Bulgaria and Romania, 6 per cent in GDR, 5 per cent in USSR and 9 per cent in Czechoslovakia. Only in Poland did output decline (by 3 per cent) but is gradually recovering (up by 6 per cent in 1984 from 1983). The gross output of the food industry in CMEA increased in 1984 by 11 per cent compared with 1980. The growth of agricultural output resulted in greater self-sufficiency of the CMEA countries in foodstuffs, and in an improved food supply for the populations.
