Abstract

Studies on intra-household allocation of resources show that exogenous increase in mothers’ income has larger effect on children’s outcomes than the same increase in fathers’ income, suggesting gender differences may exist in parents’ altruism towards their children. Using self-reported life happiness and life satisfaction, we investigate the differences by gender in mutual altruism between father and child as well as mother and child dyads in Singapore. We found that mutual altruism exists between mother and child, but not between father and child. These findings are robust to the measure of self-reported well-being. Further, we find that gender difference in altruism of fathers and mothers is not driven by the difference in the extent of future old age support desired by fathers and mothers from their children.

Our analyses on altruism are likely to be biased by altruism in richer households if the altruism dynamics in richer households are different from the altruism dynamics in poorer households.

5
Since employment of foreign maids does not affect the children’s life satisfaction, we dropped this dummy variable from the children’s life satisfaction regression to increase the number of instrument in the parents’ life satisfaction equation.

6
The OLS estimates suggest that when the correlation between parents’ and children’s happiness due to similar unobserved characteristics such as genetic predisposition are not accounted for, our estimates of altruism parameters are generally positively biased.

7
To simplify our model, we assume that children do not have off-springs.

8
The high percentages of agreement by both fathers and mothers suggest that some of the parents who agree that old age support is an important consideration for having a child may not be parents who needs old age support. This may therefore reduce the significance of our results.
