The paper shows some of the environmental related problems in Mongolia and points out the diversity of responses to political and environmental shocks that occurred in Mongolia, as well as in many countries of the arid/semi-arid Central Asian region, and the resulting changes in the use of the natural resources. First, the environmental decision-making process and the public participation in Mongolia are posted up. In the second part of this paper a brief introduction into the environmental performance of sustainable development in present day Mongolia is presented, with special attention paid to its impacts to the water resources. An overview of main water related environmental issues is discussed — degradation of pastureland, the process of increased desertification, main water pollution sources, etc.
