Multistage interconnection networks (MINs) with nearest-neighbour interconnects are the simplest interconnection scheme within the class of local interconnects. (Local means the distance of communication is bounded by a constant.) The global interconnection scheme is generated by shuffling the switches and is thus isomorphic to the local interconnects. The generation of local/global interconnects by holographic elements allows to utilize the large space-bandwidth product of optics. In the frequency domain, tuning a laser to regularly spaced frequency channels and interchanging data of nearest-neighbour channels represents the simplest organization of laser tuning. The local/global interconnection schemes are extended to any dimension of the interconnected data set and the multistage architectures (=interconnects+switches) are analysed and compared with shuffle nets.
