Manufacturing of products in urban production sites is connected to unique potentials, yet also to specific challenges. Urban factories can provide functional diversity and contribute positive impacts to a city. The concept of urban production receives rising attention in research and industry and it is recognized in its interdisciplinary nature. With a holistic approach from both the urban perspective and the factory perspective, negative impacts can be minimized, positive effects enabled and mutually beneficial, symbiotic combinations created. The presented framework and methods for the evaluation and implementation of sustainable urban production systems allow the assessment of impacts and provide the means to control and utilize the unique strengths of urban factories for cities and industry. This will allow a structured derivation of methods and measures from the concept of urban production for producing enterprises and the urban stakeholders.

Chapter 1. Introduction and Motivation
Abstract
Currently, half of the global population is living in cities and it is projected that by 2050 this share will exceed two thirds (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (2014). In cities, the concentrated population is accompanied with an intensified demand for products and services.  Against the background of a rapidly growing urban population and an increasing resource consumption, new strategies for sustainable development are required (Hauschild et al. 2017).

Abstract
 Urban production as a conceptual understanding is rooted in several scientific disciplines, which traditionally are treated seperately. With definitions of urbanity, factories and their interfaces, a guiding frame can be laid out leading to the definition of urban production as synthesis. The identification of exchange flows and their resulting effects will enable new options and methods to foster sustainable development in cities with the concept of urban production.

Production sites and factories in urban areas recently receive significant attention in research and planning. However, the impacts of production sites located in cities on their urban surroundings, the (socio-)economic implications and possible further effects, for instance on consumption behavior, are not yet fully analyzed.

Chapter 4. Integrated Concept for Analysis and Development of Sustainable Urban Production Systems
Abstract
Urban production systems are connected with the surrounding quarter, city and region through input and output flows of energy, materials and information. The analysis, purposeful design and coupling of these exchange flows can support minimizing the negative impacts induced by urban and production activities and enabling the generation of positive impacts. For an analysis and subsequent development of sustainable urban production system, an integrated approach is required based on the conceptual combination of the urban system and the factory system. For this purpose, a holistic urban factory system model is developed based on requirements deducted from the formulated research questions and hypotheses.

Chapter 5. Application of the Integrated Concept for Sustainable Urban Production Systems
Abstract
The developed concept and methods can support the analysis and development of sustainable urban production in different applications. To show the feasibility, two case studies are presented with different regional scope, products and perspectives on urban production. The first case study describes the establishment of an urban micro brewery in Germany, in which some of the developed methods were implemented and tested. In the second case study, an existing company making and selling eyewear in Australia is analyzed to highlight the potentials and opportunities of urban production.

Chapter 6. Summary, Current Challenges and Future Research Directions
Abstract
Today, factories and cities are often still treated as separate systems from single discipline’s perspectives. However, the manufacturing of products in urban production sites is connected to unique potentials, yet also to specific challenges. Urban factories can provide functional diversity and contribute positive impacts to a city. A common reference system from a holistic approach is necessary to avoid problem shifting and to enable synergetic effects.
