There is a great deal of uncertainty relevant to ground conditions during the construction of an underground structure using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). This may cause unexpected risks due to the different geotechnical hazard scenarios related to tunnel instability, fault zones, water inflow, gas inflow, squeezing, mixed ground, swelling ground, etc., which can endanger the financial success of a project. To avoid such unwanted conditions, it is crucial to assess the possible areas which may pose a threat to the tunneling operation and to determine the corresponding level of risk. …
