Application potential of Ground Penetrating Radar for the auscultation of massive bridges

Abstract

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements have been conducted on three different massive bridges for their condition survey. Novel methods of data analysis, interpretation and representation have been presented. The results show that GPR measurements provide data useful to detect inner geometrical properties (layer numbers and thicknesses) of massive structural elements accessible only from outside; cleavages, humidity and the presence of chloride ions in massive structural elements in natural stone masonry and concrete. 2D and 3D cartography representations of the extent and depth of cleavages can be produced using GPR results combined with complementary investigation. The application of the peak to peak methodology on the GPR dataset produced three different maps to represent chloride contamination, humidity and concrete cover thickness of a bridge deck slab.
