Zusammenfassung

Die Frauen- und Geschlechterstudien zur arabischen Region haben sich seit den 1970er-Jahren zu einem eigenständigen Forschungsgebiet entwickelt. Insbesondere seit den 1990er-Jahren ist die Zahl der Veröffentlichungen stark angestiegen. Forschungen verbinden in der Regel übergreifende, theoriegeleitete Fragestellungen aus der Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung mit dezidiert kritischen regionalwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven. Der Beitrag umreisst die unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zeitlich und thematisch. Auf die Darstellung zentraler konzeptioneller und methodischer Positionen folgen kurze Skizzen wichtiger Einzelbereiche wie Islam und Geschlechtergerechtigkeit, Frauenrechte und Feminismus, Geschichte und Literatur sowie Männlichkeit. Der Beitrag bezieht auch Forschungen in arabischer Sprache ein.
