Abstract

The effective absorption coefficient for transmission of X-rays through heterogeneous slabs differs from the weighted-mean absorption coefficient because of random fluctuations in the number of particles of each type of material along different parallel paths. The value of μeff is calculated for several models; for each it is less than < μ >, the difference becoming large for large particles.
