Abstract
We have investigated the rate of homogeneous nucleation in liquid 3He-4He mixtures as a function of the speed at which the system is quenched into the miscibility gap below the tricritical point. Raising the quench speed dτ/dt (the derivative of the reduced temperature τ with respect to time) leads to a pronounced increase of the number density N of the droplets which develop during the quench. The data suggest a power law dependence N ∼ (dτ/dt)1.55±0.1.
