Abstract

The growing use of electric vehicles (EVs) is important for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also poses challenges in terms of adding stress to the utility grid due to the installation of charging stations. This study proposes a solution that integrates electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) along with distributed generators (DGs) and flexible AC transmission devices (FACTS) to mitigate the impact of EVCSs on the power grid. The weak bus placement technique is utilized to identify the proper siting of EVCSs, DGs, and FACTS devices on an IEEE-24 bus system. The stability of the system is determined through contingency analysis, which calculates the voltage performance index and power performance index. The study integrates 13 EVCSs at the respective load buses, however increasing the load from 2850 to 2915 MW and thus decreasing the system losses from 51.277 to 51.54 MW respectively. A DG of 7 MW is connected at bus 7 to decrease losses to 51.175 MW even less than base losses of 51.54 MW. To maintain the overall voltage profile of the system, two FACTS devices are connected at buses 3 and 24. While EVs are a viable option for reducing transportation-related pollution, the study acknowledges that their increasing popularity and the installation of EVCSs can have a negative influence on the electrical grid, resulting in higher power losses and voltage changes. The study's goal is to examine the impact of EVCSs on the electrical grid using the NR algorithm load flow and to suggest a methodology for correcting power losses and voltage variations produced by EVCSs using DGs and FACTS devices. This research has potential benefits for researchers, academics, businesses, and society as a whole as it addresses the challenges of integrating EVs with the power grid while maintaining system stability and efficiency.
