Abstract

Research has rarely teased apart the issues related to the transgender community from lesbian, gay, and bisexual concerns. This is particularly problematic due to the relatively delayed passing of legislation to protect transgender legal rights when compared to those of various sexual orientations. With research showing how important empirical evidence can be for advocacy, this study attempts to understand the nature of the general population’s attitudes about transgender rights separate from gays and lesbians by using a multiple-segment factorial vignette to bring clarity on the similarities and differences in political attitudes about sexual orientation and gender identity. Results reveal how attitudes about legal rights differ between groups and how stable the opinions are for policies that support transgender people. These findings have the potential to be useful in building effective policy campaigns targeting members of the dominant voting group.
