The new BMW XM is set to become BMW M GmbH’s most powerful production model to date. It combines a V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor in the automatic transmission to create a plug-in hybrid drive.

The angular and bulky design borrows from the already familiar study. The front of the SUV is dominated by two-part headlight units next to the huge, illuminated BMW kidneys, which now sport a gold-colored surround. The 5110 mm long, 2005 mm wide and 1755 mm high XM stands on 21" alloy wheels as standard, with up to 23" wheels available as an option. At the rear, the emblems engraved in the windshield and the hexagonal twin tailpipes of the exhaust system, arranged one above the other for the first time, are striking.

In the interior, the driver-oriented Live Cockpit Professional consists of a 12.3" BMW Curved Display, a head-up display and a 14.9" touchscreen. It can also be operated via the iDrive controller, voice and gesture controls, and steering wheel buttons. Cloud-based navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are among the features included. The starry sky on the roof is formed from 100 LEDs. The optional Digital Key Plus allows an iPhone to be used as a key. Driver assistance systems include Driving Assistant with front collision warning and active lane departure warning, avoidance assist, attention assist and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving Assistant Professional combines the adaptive cruise control with congestion function, among other things, the steering and lane guidance assistant, traffic light recognition, automatic Speed Limit Assist and active navigation guidance.

XM Label Red with 1000 Nm of torque

The M hybrid drive of the BMW XM offers a system output of 480 kW (653 PS). The system torque is 800 Nm. The newly developed V8 gasoline engine with M TwinPower Turbo adds up to 360 kW (489 PS). It features a cross-cylinder bank exhaust manifold and optimized oil separation. The electric motor, integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, produces up to 145 kW (197 PS). The SUV sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 s. Power is transmitted to the rear-wheel-drive M xDrive system. In fall 2023, the BMW XM Label Red will launch as the most powerful M model to date with a system output of 550 kW (748 PS). The 4.4-l V8 will then deliver up to 430 kW (585 PS), with maximum system torque of 1000 Nm.

The lithium-ion battery offers a net energy content of 25.7 kWh, which should provide a purely electric range of up to 88 km according to WLTP. The e-drive sound was developed in collaboration with film music composer Hans Zimmer. The M-Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between Hybrid, Electric and eControl modes.

BMW XM to be launched in 2023

The chassis is formed by a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle. The adaptive M suspension Professional with electronically controlled shock absorbers and active roll stabilization with 48-V electric motors and Active Roll Control is standard, as is Integral Active Steering. The BMW XM is produced at the BMW Group plant in Spartanburg (USA). The M-SUV will be launched in spring 2023.
