Abstract

Currently there is a strong worldwide debate about the viability and recognition of autonomous vehicles. A survey of scientific literature is conducted using recent sources published until 2017 in the fields of public opinion, user acceptance, challenges and future opportunities associated with autonomous driving cars across the globe. A comprehensive review of the relevant literature explores a broad spectrum of opportunities and inevitable challenges associated with the development of autonomous vehicles. The paper summarizes the efforts engaged thus far in the development of the gamut of enabling technologies for autonomous driving and delves into issues associated with inertia to change, environmental impact, and the myriad technical difficulties that arise with the development of autonomous vehicles.
The aim is to use a narrative qualitative approach to provide the reader with a broader understanding of the extent to which individuals are ready to use fully autonomous vehicles, and to which society is prepared to accept a transport system incorporating fully automated vehicles.
