Mercedes-Benz is building a battery factory at its Untertürkheim plant. It will be built in the Brühl sub-plant near Esslingen to produce traction batteries for the electric vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz EQ brand.

At Daimler's Untertürkheim plant, more than 19,000 employees manufacture engines, axles, transmissions and components for Mercedes-Benz. Now, the plant is changing its focus to electric mobility: Mercedes-Benz Cars is building a 12,000 m² battery factory at its Brühl sub-plant near Esslingen. It is here where Mercedes-Benz will soon be producing traction batteries for future electric vehicles of the EQ product and technology brand. "In future, we will assemble the heart of the electric car – the battery – here ourselves," says Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, at the foundation laying ceremony.

Daimler will purchase the battery cells on the world market. The blocks of cells will be assembled into an installation-ready overall battery system in the battery factories – including housing, control unit as well as functional testing. Since 2018, the "Project Centre eATS" at the Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim plant has been a place of research for the next generation of an electronic powertrain (eATS). Prototypes of it are being built at the "E-Technical Centre". Since the beginning of 2019 the Untertürkheim plant has been responsible for a battery pilot factory as well.

Part of Daimler's battery production network

Daimler is investing more than one billion euros in a global battery production network. At the moment, this network comprises nine battery factories at seven locations on three continents. Besides the factory in Brühl in the Untertürkheim sub-plant, Daimler is also building further factories at the Hedelfingen sub-plant and the Sindelfingen Mercedes-Benz plant in the greater Stuttgart region.
