Toyota Plans to Bring Solid State Batteries by 2028

Toyota is developing four new, more powerful high-voltage battery types. In the process, the manufacturer also claims to have achieved a breakthrough in the durability of lithium-ion solid-state batteries.

Japanese automaker Toyota has unveiled a new roadmap for battery-electric vehicles. As many as four new battery types are under development, which are to be launched on the market in new vehicles from 2026 onwards. First up are the performance lithium-ion batteries, which are expected to offer WLTP ranges of more than 800 km and can be charged from 10 to 80 % SoC in 20 min or less. The cost of the batteries is expected to be reduced by 20 % compared to the current generation. From 2026/2027, the even cheaper "Popularization" battery is to be launched. It is based on the bipolar technology Toyota introduced with its nickel metal hydride hybrid batteries and uses lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO) as the core material. The new battery is expected to offer up to 20 % more range at 40 % lower cost. Charging from 10 to 80 % is said to take around 30 min at appropriate charging stations. 

The third battery, called the high-performance battery, combines the bipolar structure with lithium-ion chemistry and a nickel cathode and is expected to provide up to 1,000 km of range. At fast-charging stations, the charging time from 10 to 80 % is said to be a maximum of 20 min. Costs are to be reduced by 10 % compared to the performance battery. Also in 2027/2028, the lithium-ion solid-state battery is to be launched. Toyota has reported a technological breakthrough in the durability of this type of solid electrolyte battery. The range is expected to be around 1,000 km, while the charging time from 10 to 80 % is expected to be a maximum of 10 min. In addition, Toyota is working on batteries with a particularly flat design, as flatter and more aerodynamic vehicles have more range as well as better handling.
