Abstract

The book moves from a focus on ‘learning’ to a cultural analysis of ‘being’ a police officer. Police culture remains an enduring area of enquiry, a situation which has remained unaltered since Skolnick, Westley, Cain and Banton were writing in the 1960s and 1970s. What also, in many cases, remains unaltered is the almost universal condemnation of the culture of the police as a site of masculine hegemony, racism, prejudice, discrimination and sexism. This narrative is rarely challenged. The chapter seeks to acknowledge these debates but also to attempt to explore and, perhaps, even appreciate the role of police culture and how it is and could potentially be utilised.
