For more than ten years Berlin (West) has been playing an important role in the development and testing of modern telecommunications technology in Germany. In this city the Deutsche Bundespost has tested (with several projects) the possibilities and limits of the digitization of the existing local telephone network in several projects and the use of optical message transmission systems in local and wide area networks in practical trials. Thus the preconditions for ISDN (Services Integrated Digital Network) and the introduction of optical fibre technology have been provided here in Berlin.
