Black history in the USA is often defined within the confines of certain eras of American history, such as the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, Reconstruction, and the modern Civil Rights Movement. The latter period is almost always associated with well-known Black male leaders, with little acknowledgement and credit given to the women who were instrumental in starting, shaping, and driving the movement. Written by Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross, A Black Women’s History of the United States (2020) is a book that centers the experiences of Black women in American history, instead of relegating them to the margins.
