Fault tolerance is an important characteristic for autonomous robotic systems that operate and fulfill mission tasks in an autonomous way. Being fault-tolerant means the robot is:
more reliable in its operation;
can withstand some faulty situations that may occur during its mission;
can mitigate such failures without a human operator;
can continue implementing its mission assignments.
