Modern theories of hydrology were developed by Mariotte (1620–1684) to explain that rainwater was the source of springs (see p. 18 in Tolman 1937) and by Vallisnieri in 1715 to explain the source of artesian groundwater (see p. 15 in Meinzer 1942). William Smith, who has been called the father of English geology, did pioneer work in applying the newly developed science of geology to the problems of hydrology (see pp. 17–18 in Meinzer 1942). But, even before William Smith and before the word hydrogeology was first used by the French in 1802 (see p. 15 in Torrens 2004), drainers of agricultural land understood and were applying hydrogeologic principles throughout Great Britain. …
