Desired State Configuration (DSC) configuration scripts define what configuration has to be managed and where. The DSC resources enable this configuration change in an imperative way. As we learned from the previous chapter, there are several built-in DSC resources that enable us to perform basic system administration tasks using DSC declarative style. While discussing the built-in resources, we looked at several examples for each resource and how some of their properties are used. We, however, skipped discussion of properties such as Credential. Before we get to that, you have to understand a few more aspects of authoring configuration scripts, by parameterizing the scripts and using a technique called configuration data, to supply values to configuration scripts’ properties. This chapter builds on the knowledge you’ve gained so far and shows how we can build advanced DSC configurations that are parameterized and reusable. We will see how we can use configuration data in DSC and how nested and composite configurations are used. With these techniques, and by the end of this chapter, you will have a complete understanding of how to use the built-in resources, building better, complex, and large configuration scripts that are reusable and composable.
