The effect of wetting and drying cycles on the swelling-shrinkage behavior of the expansive soils improved by nanosilica and industrial waste

The expansive clayey soils show swelling-shrinkage behavior in wetting and drying cycles, respectively. The seasonal water content variations cause large volume changes of expansive clays, and consequently great losses on the infrastructure. In …

Landslide susceptibility mapping along the upper Jinsha River, south-western China: a comparison of hydrological and curvature watershed methods for slope unit classification

The mapping unit is the smallest indivisible unit of landslide susceptibility mapping. The mapping unit considerably affects the effect of landslide susceptibility mapping. Among many mapping units, the slope unit is one of the most suitable units …

Effect of air injection on pile and pile group behavior in liquefiable soil

Soil liquefaction during large earthquakes causes serious damage to structures built on foundations. In recent years, artificially injecting small amounts of air into liquefaction-susceptible soils has been proposed as a newly developed and …

Effect of carbonate precipitating bacteria on strength and hydraulic characteristics of loess soil

Microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is one of the environmentally friendly techniques that has recently become popular amongst geotechnical engineers. Two bacterial species of Bacillus family, i.e., B. pasteurii and B. megaterium have …

Study on crack propagation and shear behavior of weak muddy intercalations submitted to wetting-drying cycles

This study addresses the crack evolution law and shear behavior of weak muddy intercalations (WMIs) during wetting-drying cycles. The original crack images of WMI were processed; adjustments were made to overcome the reflective differences of …

The Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment is the official journal of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment and reports on the investigation, study and solution of engineering and environmental problems arising from the interaction between geology and the activities of humanity, as well as measures for the prevention or remediation of geological hazards. The journal includes but is not limited to:

  • geomorphology, structure, stratigraphy, lithology and ground water conditions of geological formations;
  • characterization of the mineralogical, physico-geomechanical, chemical and hydraulic properties of earth materials involved in construction, resource recovery and environmental change;
  • assessment of the mechanical and hydrological behaviour of soil and rock masses;
  • prediction of changes to the above properties with time;
  • determination of the parameters to be considered in analyzing the stability of engineering works and earth masses;
  • and maintenance of the environmental condition and properties of the terrain.
