Abstract

This reviews introduces the basics of engineering mechanics of solids as relevant to practising engineers and optical metrologists. The treatment is elementary in breadth but at the same time comprehensive in depth so as to touch on most topics which would be encountered in practice. The chapter gives a basic introduction to the concepts of engineering solid mechanics, the more common relationships and the determination of the parameters of interest and concludes with some elementary examples.
