Abstract
Decisions about product assortments and sales planning were introduced in Chapter ten and this chapter continues the theme of merchandise management into its next phase: the sourcing of products and their delivery from suppliers to the retailer. The term ‘supply chain management’ originated in the early 1980s, and is used to define these inbound processes and the management of a network of interconnected businesses involved in delivering goods and services to the ultimate customer (Harland, 1996). The aim of this chapter is to expand the boundaries of supply-chain management, starting with issues of how and why products are sourced from suppliers. Chapter 12 will complete the cycle by following the merchandise into the retailer and analysing the internal processes of inventory management.
