Abstract
Having reached the highest positions in French academia in 1840, Liouville had the opportunity to bury himself in his research without the urgent need to publish feverishly. Such may have been his own dream about his life as an academician and a member of the Bureau des Longitudes, but as it often happens, he soon lost his illusions. Teaching and administrative work for the Académie, the Bureau, and his Journal took up an increasing amount of time.
