Abstract

while struggling with the theory of differentiation of arbitrary order, Liouville began to develop another theory for which he is usually hailed as the founder: the theory of integration in finite terms. He published 11 papers on the subject in the period from 1833 to 1841 and at some point had the idea of bringing the theory together in a book. However, this idea never materialized.
