Beyond Validity: Utility and Legal Considerations in the Application of Psychophysiological Detection

  • Chapter
Theories and Applications in the Detection of Deception

Abstract

Proponents as well as opponents of the polygraph concentrate almost exclusively on the question of validity, although they usually rely on different data sets and arrive at different conclusions (e.g., Lykken, 1978a,b, 1979; Podlesny and Raskin, 1977, 1978; Raskin, 1978; Raskin and Hare, 1978; Raskin and Podlesny, 1979). Even more neutral reviews of the detection literature refer to validity as the major issue (e.g., Saxe et al., 1985).
