Abstract

The optical portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is probably the spectral region in which electromagnetic sources show the greatest degree of diversity in coherence properties. Thermal optical sources (heated wire filaments) radiate totally random waves which can exhibit appreciable spectral component amplitudes throughout the optical spectrum. Highly stabilized, singlefrequency lasers, on the other hand, can exhibit short-term linewidths as small as 1 Hz with the attendant coherence lengths of thousands of kilometers.
