Abstract
The view of the history and meaning of mechanics implied by most textbooks is derived from the quite unreliable Science of Mechanics by E. Mach 1, which overlooks the deeper conceptual problems, dismissing them as mere “mathematics”. There have been few subsequent attempts to treat the subject at large. Among them should be mentioned the [...] history of physics by E. Hoppe 2 and Duhem’s original but rather overdrawn Les Origines de la Statique 3. To correct the gross errors of most of the historical statements in current books the best course is to return to the sources. Here E. Jouguet has done great service in making many short extracts available in his anthology4.
