Abstract

Research over the past decades has lead to major insights into the structure and function of the basal ganglia and to the development of circuit models of these nuclei and of their role in the pathophysiology of movement disorders (Albin et al., 1989; DeLong, 1990; Albin, 1995; Brooks, 1995; Chesselet and Delfs, 1996; Wichmann and DeLong, 1996). Although these models have had significant heuristic value, especially in guiding new research into surgical and pharmacologic treatments for movement disorders, it was clear even at the time of their inception that they were oversimplified, and would need almost continuous updating. This brief overview will focus on the principal features of these circuit models, especially with regard to their application as models to explain the pathophysiology of movement disorders.
