Abstract
Chitin, chitosan and derivatives have been tested for use in pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields. Beads, powders, tablets, films and sponge sheets have been prepared from chitin and chitosan. Several water-soluble and enzymatically digestible derivatives of chitin and chitosan have been prepared, and the rate of their enzymic hydrolysis was controlled by the substitution degree and structure of AFacyl groups in these derivatives. These derivatives are usable as cosmetic ingredients because of their biodegradable, biocompatible, viscosity and moisture-holding properties. Some commercial products are hair care products containing chitosan, skin care products containing carboxymethylchitosan, and chitin suture absorbable in tissues.
