Abstract

Polymeric controlled drug delivery systems have emerged as important pharmaceutical dosage forms because it was recognized that drug delivery affords many medical and commercial advantages. Also, advances in polymer science and technology have enabled the economic manufacture and reproducible performance characteristics of drug devices. This paper provides an overview of oral controlled-release dosage forms: their rationale, principles governing their design and development, technologies available for drug delivery and their selection, and physiochemical principles governing the kinetics of drug release. Polymers studied for drug delivery applications and their selection, approaches to achieve constant release rates, and commercially important controlled drug delivery devices are discussed.
