Abstract
Consider a demographic process (natality or mortality, for example) relating to a group of N persons having experienced a particular event, hereafter called event-origin, during the same period of time, for example, during the same calendar year. This group of persons having experienced a particular event-origin (e.g., birth or marriage) during the same period will be called a cohort For example, when birth is the event-origin considered, the related cohort will be specified by the name birth-cohortw1 ; birth-cohort 1936 will thus refer to all persons born during the year 1936 in the area considered (e.g., in the USA).
