Stream Regulation in Africa: A Review

  • Chapter
The Ecology of Regulated Streams

Abstract

Almost every river on the continent of Africa has been interfered with, mainly by construction of man-made lakes. However, most ecological-impact research has been directed towards the biological development of such impoundments as inundation proceeds. Only a very small proportion of research has made any attempt to elucidate downstream effects. Exceptions may be found in studies on the Nile (White and Blue), Volta, Zambezi, Vaal, and Pongolo rivers.
