Abstract

In view of the importance of plasma confinement by a magnetic field in controlled thermonuclear research, as well as in other applications, we present in this chapter a detailed treatment of plasma confinement for the special case in which the confinement is produced by an azimuthal (θ) self-magnetic field, due to an axial current in the plasma generated by an appropriately applied electric field.
