Abstract

This chapter extends the model predictive control framework to systems with flexible redundant and shared elements. Flexible redundant elements can increase the reliability and fault-tolerance; shared elements can increase the economic efficiency of automated processes. However, flexible redundant elements require elaborate control systems for task synchronization and shared elements require elaborate control systems for conflict avoidance. It is explained in this chapter, how interval max-plus fault-tolerant control can address these two challenges.
