Abstract

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the cranial surgery succeeded around the Mediterranean basin, just in the countries where the Renaissance cultural movement flourished. In this chapter we present and discuss the most relevant proposals about cranial surgery, indications for trepanation and technique and instruments suggested by the French surgeons Ambroise Paré and Jacques Guillemeau; the Italian authors Giovanni de Vigo, Giovanni Andrea della Croce, Jacopo Berengario, Leonardo Bottallo and Fabricio d’Acquapendente; and a group of Spanish surgeons, such as Andrés Alcázar, Francisco Arceo and Dionisio Daza Chacón.
