Abstract

Implementation of NFC has been slow and unsteady, and the likelihood and timeline of mainstream adoption remains uncertain. Still, while commercial attention has focused on the painfully complex rollout of NFC mobile payment, we believe that the real impact of NFC and its true value to end users will come instead from its myriad applications in other contexts, from access and authentication to inventory control to health care. By empowering objects to communicate and establishing a “touch to share” paradigm, NFC technology has the potential to transform the information environment surrounding our libraries and fundamentally alter the ways in which our patrons interact with information.
