Das Wort „Placebo” wurde zum ersten Mal 1340 von Geoffrey Chaucer in Anspielung auf den Psalm 116.9 spöttisch benutzt, dessen erste Zeile „Placebo Domino in regione vivorum” (Ich werde wandeln vor dem Herrn im Lande der Lebenden) lautet und der von Priestern und Mönchen mit Eifer und gegen Entgelt für den Toten gesungen wurde (Kiss 2000).
