Abstract
Water profoundly affects wood. Perfectly dry wood swells as the cell walls take up moisture until the fibres are saturated. The gain in water content transforms a relatively brittle material into one that is more plastic and deformable under load. Wood above a certain moisture content is also biodegradable.
