Abstract
Observations of the fabrics of clastic sediments were made as early as the middle of the 19th century. In 1860 Jamieson (p.349) commented on imbrication of stones in creek beds in Scotland. Systematic study of sedimentary fabrics did not begin, however, until after the appearance of “Gefügekunde der Gesteine” by Bruno Sander in 1930. His book, primarily concerned with the fabric of tectonites, provided a systematic methodology and developed principles of interpretation which are readily applied to sedimentary rocks.
