Fabrics and Geophysical Properties (1963–1976)

Paleocurrents and Basin Analysis

Abstract

The study of particle orientation to determine flow direction has been actively pursued since 1963, even though fabrics are generally used only when nothing else suffices. This activity includes some new techniques and some limited experimental studies. Much more significant, however, is the wide range of sediments in which dimensional fabrics have been studied. These include carbonate rocks, volcaniclastic deposits, and loess. Thus, after seeing the results from glacial tills and sandstones, sedimentologists and paleoecologists have applied these methods to other lithologies. On the other hand, there has been little or no progress in relating the orientation of framework grains to directional permeability and we know of only one earth science paper since 1963 on the theoretical aspects of particle orientation. This paper, by Bhattachuryya (1966), is an amplification of an earlier study by Rusnak* (1957b), who in turn followed Jeffery (1922). Many theoretical papers, of potential value to those sedimentologists who understand mathematics and theoretical hydrodynamics, are found in the chemical engineering literature (Condiff and Brenner, 1969; Henline and Condiff, 1970; Brenner and Condiff, 1972, 1974). These papers, mostly concerned with orientation of molecular particles in gases, are very well referenced and probably contain the basis for some significant contributions to sedimentology by those who are willing to take the trouble to master them.

Persistent, very diversified activity with much interest in fossil orientation
