Abstract

We study in this section some elementary aspects of the theory of large cardinals, with emphasis on properties of the weakly compact and measurable cardinals. Both these classes of cardinals are defined by conditions concerning the existence of certain ultrafilters. Some elementary knowledge of such cardinals is needed later on (in §§ 14,15). In view of the extensive recent developments in this area, our study of these cardinals for their own interest is far from complete and in fact rather modest; on the other hand it is more than sufficient for our later uses.
