Abstract

The previous chapter dealt with topics that were primarily related to optimizing the power output and conversion efficiency of diode-laser arrays and single-element diode lasers. This chapter is devoted to principal concepts related to spatial and spectral mode discrimination in semiconductor diode-laser arrays. We begin in Sect. 3.1 by reviewing the symmetric three-layer planar waveguide model. This model is central to our understanding of the spatial-mode properties of both diode lasers and diode-laser arrays, as it is often used to elucidate the waveguide and spatial-mode characteristics. Analysis of specific multilayer diode-laser array structures is dealt with in Chap. 4.
